Sikkim has been dubbed the ‘Switzerland of Asia.’ But it is, perhaps, more colourful. It’s famous for its endless terraces of rice paddies; its large cardamom; its exquisite Himalayan peaks; the ethnic diversity of its inhabitants; and its unique Buddhist traditions. In fact, in more esoteric circles of Buddhism, it’s known as ‘Beyul Denjong’ or Guru Rinpoche’s ‘Hidden Land, Valley of Rice’ – considered one of the most sacred places on earth. But since being swept into the peripheries of India in 1975, only traces of its rich cultural and spiritual heritage remain.

Project Denjong is community of thought that aspires to redefine our relationships with our communities, our cultures, and our landscapes. We host a non-profit collection of initiatives focused on facilitating scholarship and encouraging creativity to restore a sense of collective ownership in heritage preservation. We invest in people, in creativity, and in education—in the revitalization rather than the memorialization of Sikkim’s rich history— to ensure that our wisdom traditions continue to be an integral, living part of our contemporary identity. Our first activity is the Digitisation of the Sikkim Palace Archives, 1875–1975, being journaled through our BLOG.
